Choosing a Locksmith

Choose a Quality Locksmith
Most states have minimum requirements and regulations that govern locksmiths. Make sure the company you're considering meets all these regulations, and also make sure they have bonding and liability insurance. There might be a difference in price between locksmiths, but you can almost always guarantee the higher priced locksmith is the one with all the current certifications and regulations.
Choose a Locksmith You're Comfortable With
Your locksmith or security system installer will have access to some of your most precious possessions - like your car, your office - even your home. This person should be going out of their way to make you feel secure. Make sure you're comfortable with the locksmith you're talking to. If the locksmith you're considering makes you feel uncomfortable or intimidated - go somewhere else. Your gut is a pretty accurate gauge of what your own comfort level is.
Check on Credentials
Many states like California, also require the locksmiths to possess a valid Locksmith License - (which requires fingerprinting to the Department of Justice) - and a Contractors License. If you're just getting keys made, you might not need this documentation to feel comfortable. But if you're having some kind of security or surveillance system installed by this professional, make sure their credentials are good - and up to date. Consult your state to find out which requirements locksmiths must meet near you.
